7 Things To Do In Morocco

Few places in the world will you give the experience you will get from visiting Morocco. Maybe you heard it from a friend, or simply read it somewhere, you are now curious when you found out that Morocco is one of the few places that you absolutely must visit. Allow me to confirm a suspicion on your mind, they are right and Morocco is worth visiting. But the thing about Morocco is, that the area is filled with opportunities for things to do. But for the sake of ease, we have reduced the number down to 7. Here are the 7 things to do in Morocco:

Visit the tanneries in Fes:

Fes is pretty well known and famous for its leather products and most of them come from the leather bazaar in old Fes. The tanneries have been in operation for a long time, almost dating back to the medieval times and very little has changed since then. To experience the tanneries, head to any shop that is filled to the top with leather products.

Take a stroll through the streets of Chefchaouen:

Chefchaouen is situated in the heart of Morocco’s Rif Mountains. Chefchaouen is relaxed, with very affordable accommodations, and above all, quite stunning to look at. The streets and most of the buildings in the old part of town (medina) are painted a most brilliant sky blue. From the end of every cobbled street, you will catch the sight of the majestic mountains, the clear mountain light just adds a magical touch to the place.

Let off the steam in a Traditional Hammam:

A Hammam is a public steam bath in Morroco, back in the day the hammams would be the only place people would come to bathe and scrub as bathrooms in a house was a rather expensive luxury. Getting a good scrub at a local hammam is a wonderful, eye-opening cultural experience. There are upscale hammams in Riads and luxury hotels, that offer more Western style massages and scrubs, while still using local products.

Overnight in the Sahara:

The Sahara desert, at least the part that is situated in Morroco is a magical place to spend a couple of nights. The most popular to explore is the desert landscape, particularly in a little place called Merzouga. The Erg Chebbi dunes may look familiar especially if you have seen the movies Mummy or Sahara. These dunes are around 450 miles from Marrakech.

Surfing:

This is the beauty of Morrocco, at one place you have the Saharan desert and at the other, you can surf out over the waves. Popular times during the year are near winter when swells are consistently good and the water and air temperature are quite mild. Taghazoute is the most popular surfing town, just north of Agadir. There are numerous spots to serve close to town and several surf shops and hotels to choose from.

Find some peace and quiet at the Majorelle Gardens:

The Majorelle Gardens are located in Marrakech and are filled with rare plants, bright colors from different flowers and most of all, peace and quiet. The botanical gardens are situated north-west of the Medina of Marrakech, about a 30-minute walk. (Stop by the wholesale market en route to see mountains of dates, nuts, and grains getting bought and sold). The gardens were designed by the Frenc painter Jacques Majorelle, he settled in the area in 1919. They were restored in 1980.

The Atlas Trek:

Desert, surfing and now even mountains; Morrocco has it all. The Atlas Mountains stretch over 1500 miles, from the Wes Coast all the way to Tunisia. The High Atlas in Morrocco is the home to the highest peak in North Africa, Jebel Toubkal which is 4,167 meters tall. Most treks start from Imlil, which is an hour long drive from Marrakech. You can trek year round, but the best time to go is April-May. There are simple accommodations available and you don’t have to go with a guide, but it is recommended. The Ourika Valley slopes gently alongside the Ourika river, resulting in beautiful views from small Berber villages
